Please read through the following guidelines before submitting your article for publication in the Journal.

Article type
Articles should be submitted in the form of a letter to the editor, an editorial, an article on a subject of educational or professional interest, a short piece on social or personal news, or a notice of an event of interest to members. Humorous pieces are also welcome.

If you have any suggestions on topics to be included in the Journal or wish to invite a colleague from a related profession to write a feature article, then please contact the editor (via email) in the first instance.

Length
Letters to the editor, editorials, notices, social news and humorous pieces should be less than 500 words. Full articles should be no more than 1000 words

Format/presentation of article

All articles should include a title, full names of all authors and their work addresses, an email address and telephone number for the corresponding author.

If possible, articles should be prepared in Word and sent to the editors (Editorial Team) by email. If you do not have access to email, then please post a hard copy of your article and disk to Anna Paton, 132 Mayfield Road, Edinburgh, EH9 3AH.

Illustrations
Photographs and illustrations are encouraged. Each should have a caption and should be submitted either in digital form (jpeg or gif file) by email attachment or as a hard copy in the post. If sent as hard copy, photographs should be submitted as glossy prints and diagrams should be clearly drawn using black ink.

References
If another article is mentioned in your contribution, a full reference should be given to that article. Please use the following style:
Mannion S, Hart A. The 1999 London Bombings: The St Thomas’ Hospital Experience. Network 2000; 1: 19-20. (Author(s). Title of Article. Journal Year; Volume: Pages.)

Borrowed material

If your article includes material that has been published elsewhere, please ensure that you have obtained written permission from the copyright holder (which may either be the author or the publisher). A form for obtaining permission can be obtained from the editors.

The editors and the publisher reserve the right to edit any material that is submitted to the Journal. Submission of an article does not guarantee its publication in JMS.

Copyright
The BSMS has the copyright to all articles published in the Journal. This means that the BSMS has to be informed and give permission if a third party wishes to reproduce a JMS article in another journal or book.

When an article is accepted for publication in JMS, the authors agree to transfer the copyright to the British Society of Medical Secretaries.

Authors who have had their article published in JMS may send their article to another journal or book for publication as long as they inform the editors of JMS and ensure that the other book or journal acknowledges that it was first published in JMS (by including a full reference, for example Williams V. Clinical Freedom Versus Clinical Governance. Network 2000; 1: 15).

Articles submitted to JMS must be original and must not have been published before (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture); articles must not be submitted for publication elsewhere; and all authors must agree to publication.
